MAKAN innovation

Amputation surgery is an integral part of the professional activity of PD Dr Mathieu Assal. Although it is less frequent thanks to medical advances, amputation remains an inevitable solution for some patients. Mid-thigh amputation and the fitting of prosthetic legs as well as subsequent walking rehabilitation remains a complex and difficult process.

The MAKAN innovation is an implant developed by Mr Alain Lacraz, Head Physiotherapist at the HUG, in close collaboration with the PD Dr Mathieu Assal, whose concept makes it possible to significantly improve the quality of walking thanks to greater support in the prosthetic limb.

The surgical procedure involves inserting an implant into the patient's stump to provide direct support. This innovation has received several awards, including the Innovation Prize from the Geneva University Hospitals (Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève). After 5 years of trials, validation and certification, the first implant was inserted in early 2018.
