MAKAN Innovation

Amputation surgery is an integral part of PD Dr. Mathieu ASSAL’s work. Although it is less common thanks to advances in medicine, amputation remains an unavoidable solution for some patients. Above-knee amputation continues to be a level of amputation with which walking and fitting a prosthesis are particularly challenging.

The MAKAN innovation is an implant developed by Mr. Alain LACRAZ, head physiotherapist at the HUG, in close collaboration with PD Dr. Mathieu ASSAL. The concept makes it possible to significantly improve walking quality thanks to better support within the prosthesis.

The surgical procedure involves the insertion of an implant into the patient’s stump, allowing for direct support. This innovation has received several awards, including the Innovation Prize from the Geneva University Hospitals. After 5 years of trials, validation, and certifications, the first implant was placed at the beginning of 2018.
