Plantar fasciitis, or inflammation of the plantar fascia of the foot, can cause pain in the underside of the heel.
The fibrous tissue structure running from the heel to the sole, which supports the arch of the foot, can become inflamed as a result of excess weight, carrying unusually heavy loads or repetitive walking on hard ground.
Treatments used to alleviate the pain associated with this condition include physiotherapy, use of a brace, anti-inflammatory medication by mouth, or use of special orthopaedic insoles. Corticosteroid injections can also provide relief for some patients. Surgery is recommended when no positive outcome has been obtained following at least one year of conservative treatment.
